FR Review: Bruce Bierman wins accolades for his practical skills, refined aesthetic, and warm personality.
While he is know as a modernist, clients also appreciate his ability to do traditional work with a lighter touch. Spaces typically feature a few shapely focal points, rather than an overwhelming number of objects.
Projects include a large stone house in Greenwich, a penthouse at the Breakers in Palm Beach, an apartment in Miami, an apartment on Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, and a loft in Chelsea. Started in , the firm now employs a staff of fifteen. Clients happily report the team works well together and makes the process enjoyable.
The firm charges a design fee depending upon the scope of the work, a reasonable percentage over net for product and standard oversight fees. Products are of high quality, but never over the top. Antiques may be purchased on an hourly consultation basis or percentage, depending upon the involvement of the firm.
Clients strongly recommend Bierman for his sympathetic approach to their lifestyle. Efficiency of design shows up in the kitchen cabinets and pantry shelves, built 30 to 36 inches deep rather than the typical 24 inches, offering loads of storage space.
The island in the kitchen is mystery white Italian marble that seems to float atop a pedestal, rendering it an unobtrusive divider between kitchen and dining room. They say they want extra room and I show them they already have the space they need. In the living area adjacent to the kitchen, Bierman custom designed the upholstered furniture—including the foot-long couch—in neutral shades of taupe.
He also designed the 8-foot-long coffee table, which required a steel-rod reinforcement down the center to prevent it from sagging when stacked with an array of books. The intentionally oversized sofa and coffee table that invite relaxation also ironically make the small space appear bigger, he explains.
Over the sofa, Secord chose an imposing painting of a deerhound and a terrier by a favorite artist of Queen Victoria, the Scottish nineteenth-century painter Gourlay Steell. The nearby master suite features a high-gloss mahogany headboard and, of course, a dog painting—this one of a Weimaraner by contemporary artist Christine Merrill.
A freestanding tub in the master bath looks out over the view. A mirror designed by Stanford White hangs above the master bath vanity, flanked by Art Deco designer Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann sconces from the s, purchased in Paris. With its quiet decor and ease of design, the penthouse echoes the way the couple lives, Bierman says. His favorite area in the penthouse? The living room, where he can enjoy the tableau of nature outside.
The floor-to-ceiling sliding doors allow him to see the ocean from wherever he sits.
